Residents who sign up for Hounslow’s Garden Waste collection from today can benefit from a fortnightly collection service until the 31 March for a reduced fee of £30, instead of the annual fee of £50 for the full year.
The cost to residents in receipt of Council Tax Reduction will be even less, at just £15 for the half year. The half year collection is being introduced for residents in the borough who would benefit from the service but who feel they’ve missed the opportunity by not having signed up earlier in the year.
To date this year, 18,300 households across the borough have signed up to the service. Last year the council collected around 8,340 tonnes of garden waste which was turned into compost – that’s enough to fill three Olympic-sized swimming pools!
The half year collection will run until 31 March 2019 with a break over the Christmas and New Year period. The half year discount will end on 16 December. Subscribers for next year’s garden waste service can register from 1 February 2019 with a discounted early bird rate until the end of February.
Residents can sign up online at www.hounslow.gov.uk/gardenwaste and payment can be made as a one-off subscription paid by card.
Councillor Guy Lambert, Cabinet Member for Highways, Recycling and Trading Companies said: “Hounslow council is committed to driving up the borough’s recycling rates to 50 per cent by 2020 and we want to help residents to achieve this in every way we can.
Garden waste collected from across the borough is turned into compost which can then be reused. We want to reach those residents who missed out on signing up earlier in the year as it all makes a difference to how much we recycle. Hounslow recycles. We do because it’s important.”
The garden waste collection service will continue to be run by Lampton 360, the company wholly owned by Hounslow Council.
